How Self-Portraits Help Me Connect with My Clients

As a photographer, I understand the importance of capturing not just the perfect shot, but also the essence of my subjects. Taking self-portraits has been a critical part of my journey, allowing me to empathize with my clients and create a comfortable environment during photoshoots. Let me share my experiences with self-portraits and how they've helped me become a better photographer for you.

Thoughts On Vulnerability

Taking self-portraits can leave one feeling incredibly exposed. Every blemish, uneven feature, wrinkle, and grey hair becomes visible, and for those who have dealt with body image or self-esteem issues, the vulnerability can be overwhelming. But it's precisely this exposure that has taught me valuable lessons about photography and connecting with my clients.

A quick insight into my own insecurities...

"...you should probably accept that the fact that you were bullied in middle school is still a pretty big part of your personality, even though it matters a little less every year." - Hank Green, on LinkedIn

This quote from Hank Green really hits home. Like many, bullying was an "undiagnosed issue" in my formative years and really had a hand in my self-esteem growing up. I didn't dress cool, my hair was messy and unkept, I was VERY scrawny, I enjoyed all the nerdy things, I was a goody-two-shoes... the list goes on. The point is, the popular crowd made sure I knew all of this. And day in day out of hearing, you can really start to become what they say you are; this formed a huge issue of how I viewed myself that sort of continues to this day.

So when I say that I understand that looking at photos of yourself might make your skin crawl, well, I get it!

Okay, back to the topic at hand...

Why Self-Portraits Matter

There are two key reasons why I find self-portraits so important:

  1. Empathy: By putting myself in front of the camera, I can better understand the vulnerability my clients feel during photoshoots. This experience allows me to create a more relaxed atmosphere, helping clients feel at ease and capturing their true essence.

  2. Appreciating Imperfections: By examining my own so-called "flaws," I've learned to see them as unique characteristics that contribute to the complete picture. This perspective has not only improved my photography skills but also enabled me to find beauty in every subject, regardless of their perceived imperfections.

How This Benefits You

As a photographer, my ultimate goal is to make my clients feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera. My experiences with self-portraits have provided me with the insight and understanding needed to achieve this. By recognizing the vulnerability inherent in the process, I can create a supportive environment that allows your true personality to shine through.

Moreover, my appreciation for the beauty in imperfections helps me to capture the essence of your character, creating authentic and captivating images that you can treasure for a lifetime.

Taking self-portraits has been an invaluable part of my growth as a photographer. By embracing vulnerability and appreciating the unique characteristics that make each person special, I am better equipped to connect with my clients and create stunning images that capture their true selves. When you choose to work with me, you can trust that your photoshoot will be an enjoyable and empowering experience, resulting in images that reflect the authentic "you"!
